History

It all started with an idea. One day, the founder of Hoopla's, whom we'll call Chris, began to realize something. He noticed that the business of comedy and comedy clubs seemed to be a dying form of entertainment. Without big name draws, audiences weren't coming out. The only clubs making it in the business, were those well known, and nationally recognized establishments that could pay for national headliners. With an overly saturated area of comedians in Los Angeles, it became increasingly difficult for comedians who still had great talent, to find opportunities in front of great crowds. There had to be a way where promising talent could not only hone their craft, but do it in front of real and attentive audiences and industry. Given the difficulty of running a successful comedy club, Chris, a comedian himself, came up with a novel, and original idea. What if people could be given not only comedy, but comedy in a way where it complements other forms of desired amusement and leisure? Enter the creation of Hoopla's - a company created to provide a triple deal in leisure and pastime. Audiences get the best value possible, and Hoopla's comedians get to share in our number one priority - creating fun, memories, and good times.

About the founder:

Chris Reese is a comedian living in Los Angeles, who is originally from Washington, D.C. He took his first steps into the world of comedy performing at the open mics of the Comedy Connection of Laurel, Md., whose stage saw many legendary names, including that of Steve Harvey, Martin Lawrence, and Chris Rock. In January of 1999, he appeared on “Showtime at The Apollo,” in which he made an impression on Steve Harvey, the host of the show at the time. In May of 2000, Chris relocated to L.A., in order to continue to pursue his career in comedy. Since that time he has performed at numerous comedy clubs including the Comedy Store, The Laugh Factory, the Hollywood Improv, Mixed Nuts, and The IceHouse.

In addition to being a talent in comedy, Chris has also displayed obvious talent in filmmaking. He received an award for best undergraduate film of the year in 1998, from his alma mater, Howard University. While at Howard, Chris was able to study acting from Al Freeman, Jr., star of “Malcolm X,”, and he hopes this proves useful, as he seeks to expand his talents into acting. In addition to receiving his B.A. in film production in 1998, Chris received his M.A. in management from National University in 2005. He is also a brown belt in aikido.

Growing up and living with Sickle Cell, Chris has vowed to spread the word about the genetic disorder of the blood which affects approximately 72,000 individuals in the United States. Hoopla’s will dedicate a percentage of proceeds to raise awareness and help increase funds for the cause.
